Prespective Configures the Topography

The French philosopher and cultural theorist Jean Baudrillard’s ideas are often called upon when matters of simulation come into discussion. When asked what new technology could potentially offer us, he suggests that new media isn’t that new:

I don’t know much about this subject. I haven’t gone beyond the fax and the automatic answering machine. I have a very hard time getting down to work on the screen because all I see there is a text in the form of an image which I have a hard time entering. With my typewriter, the text is at a distance; it is visible and I can work with it. With the screen, it’s different; one has to be inside; it is possible to play with it but only if one is on the other side, and immerses oneself in it. That scares me a little, and Cyberspace is not of great use to me personally.”

This raises an interesting question regarding technological topography: at what point does a user stop interacting via mediation and begin interacting “directly” with an environment?

Is a paramedic directly working on a patient? Their interactions in the 21st century are mediated by latex gloves, surely they aren’t directly interacting with any patients. This is just another example of a technological mediation.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines technology as follows:

technology |tɛkˈnɒlədʒi|noun ( pl. -gies)the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, esp. in industry : advances in computer technology | recycling technologies. machinery and equipment developed from such scientific knowledge. the branch of knowledge dealing with engineering or applied sciences.

Surely even the paramedic is using technology already to interact in every way during his/her job. The difference between my paramedic example and interacting with a different space, such as cyberspace, is that the paramedic interacts seamlessly with his environment. (although arguably the same feelings happen in virtual reality)

The virtual experiences as perceived by the characters in the words of Surrogates (2009) or Caprica (2009) is indistinguishable by its users from real existence. While we have nothing that equates to “sensory input” in our virtual realities at this point in history, it may not be too far off. We are already designing devices which are activated by our thoughts alone. It probably isn’t much longer before fully developed sensory feedback equipment becomes common place in our daily interactions with the world.

Artist-driven vs advertiser-driven radio and music

One of my favorite things about BBC radio 1 is that they seem to have taken the artist approach to media. In North America i would describe the approach as advertiser-based. A radio DJ in Canada is nothing more than a vocal-billboard announcing the media but having little say in the content itself.

BBC has renowned DJ’s at the helms every night. They genuinely are masters of their genres, and these DJ’s pick tracks that rock! I’ts important to point out that I feel that advertising has a genuine value in our society. It can be mixed with media in in a (mostly) harmless way. What I object to is the play listing, track selection and general format of our radio. BBC has blessed me with a second love of radio and dance music.

Digital music was meant to be listened to uninterrupted and it seems it has taken the internet age almost a decade to display its most aesthetic listening format. Napster started in the summer of 1999 and this service unequivocally sparked the mp3 sensation worldwide.

So here is to BBC Radio 1 and all they have done for my music appreciation!

Holiday – Dizzee Rascal Feat. Chrome, new video (Produced by Calvin Harris)

Wow, yet another video that pushes Ibiza to the top of my Holiday destination list. I think Amsterdam just got bumped for that Boogie Nights pool party going on in the video . . .

Apparently Calvin Harris was supposed to appear in this video in his trademark tshirt and sun glasses. On set some sort of creative dispute ensued and the end result; no Calvin Harris cameo. I hope I never become so anal that I can’t be bothered to change my FUCKING shirt to be in a music video. Maybe if I REALLY liked that tshirt . . .

Also highly recommended is the Laidback Luke remix for this track . . . even more club-friendly, if you can imagine that.

Reasons to become a DJ

Fuck work, where IS your life going anyhow?

If you’re like most people you spend your days waking up, and working for SOMEBODY ELSE. Wake up at this time, then go to that place in order to fill out those reports for that GUY. Maybe you should consider a career change that would make you “THAT GUY”.

Here are a few good reasons:

  1. You’ll be making some big bucks. Paul Oakenfold is reportedly makes $7.5 million dollars a year and there are plenty of DJs who charge as much as $50,000 for one gig (Tiesto, deadmau5). Not bad for playing out pre-recorded music.
  2. You don’t even need to be a musician. You might be a champ with ‘guitar hero’ but learning to play real guitars or keeping time with a live band on with drums is actually hard work. DJing is the real trick to playing a party with no practice.
  3. All DJs are sexy. It doesn’t matter if you are a boy who loves girls, a girl who likes boys, a boy who enjoys boys or a girl who prefers girls. DJing is probably one of the sexiest jobs and you will never be short of a bed companion.
  4. Enjoy VIP treatment. You don’t have to be a big name superstar DJ to get a taste of the VIP treatment. Being a DJ gets you the connections and peer respect that makes VIP treatment fall into your lap.
  5. Get lots of free stuff. You’ll soon be receiving offers of free music, clothes, booze and DJ equipment.

All you need to do now is create an impressive mix CD (not suck at it) and get yourself some bookings. Wishing you luck in your new career!

A quick shot of the helicopter ride over to Creamfields and a bit of footage from the event itself. The first part is the really cool part, then it starts to get a bit boring, hope you enjoy!

PvD pulls a dirty trick by cancelling ATB at Planet Love 2009

Politics will always prevail in conflicts . . . even at planet LOVE. You would think that with a name like “Planet Love” this party would be the perfect scene for some collaboration, but there was no good will to be seen.

According to the myspace and Twitter account of trance DJ ATB, Paul Van Dyk told the organizers that he would refuse to play if ATB was on stage before him. My best guess is that Paul Van Dyk was afraid of too much similar music being played. It seems petty that anybody that considers themselves a professional would pull this sort of childish bullshit in the middle of a large event.

I feel bad for the fans . . .

“You won’t believe what you will read now. I’m just back in my hotelroom (05.09.2009, 10:30 PM), but actually I should be on stage at the Planet Love Festival in Belfast now.

The reality is, that the organizers just told me and my manager one our ago at the festival, that Paul van Dyk told them, that when I play (my contracted playtime was 10-12 PM) my set right before his set 12-2 AM, he will not play! So the organizers decided to throw me out of the lineup!
I just want to let you know, how people in this scene and business works and of course this will have consequences to all concerned parties!
I’m so sorry for all the fans out there, who wasn’t able to see me.

Sebastien Leger brings down the house . . .literally!

Sebastien Leger brought the house down at this 2008′s Creamfields in the Czech Republic. And I’m not just using a figure of speech.

“The gig was going really well but the weather was terrible,” he recalls. “Suddenly the wind ripped the roof off and then the speakers collapsed almost on top of me. It was a nightmare!” The rest of the event had to be canceled and luckily nobody was injured. Leger and many caught the incident on cameras and the footage is now on YouTube.

You can check out footage of the event below:

Here is a version with better audio from Leger’s own camera:
