Acoustic Treatment – Bass Traps
Bass traps are used to solve specific acoustic problems in rooms to improve the quality of sound in a room. ATAM Productions is the main source we rely on for Acoustic Treatment in Ottawa check them out here. But for more information about acoustic treatment, read on.
- For recording engineers and bedroom producers they make decisions that work in the room but sound terrible everywhere else. If the root frequency of the bass isn’t playing clearly, or worse if it sounds louder than it really is, than its impossible to create a mix that sound good everywhere.
- For your home theatre this will be noticeable through hard to understand movie dialogue, indistinct or boomy instruments. These are all results of high room ambience and this can be dampened with bass traps.
To solve this common acoustic problem I use a very high-performance acoustic medium. This is a high-density fibreglass that is upholstered in custom fabric to match the metal frame.
In my own experience once a room has been properly treated with these bass traps the clarity of music, the stereo image and any bass frequencies become immediately more clear and punchy.
Generally speaking, most rooms need as many bass traps as you can fit and afford. Although it is definitely possible to make a room too dead at midrange and high frequencies, you probably cannot have too much low frequency absorption. The effectiveness of bass traps is directly related to how much of the room’s total surface area you treat, which includes the walls, floor, and ceiling.
I recently found a fantastic resource on room acoustics. There are also some leads towards designing your own acoustic treatment, but the focus is more on price than aesthetic quality. Check out this Acoustics site.
I build bass traps in Ottawa for very reasonable prices for studio owners, musicians and home theatre enthusiasts. The fabric can be any colour that we can find and the frames are available in Black, Burgundy, Sand, White, Grey, Red and Blue.
